Resume Tips

Employers mainly skim resumes, spending an average time of only 15-30 seconds on each one. Your resume may be 1 of 100, so it should be easy on the eyes, clear, and a quick read. Remember that your resume should be easy to read. Try to keep the length of your resume to 2 pages by highlighting the experiences and knowledge that are most relevant to the opportunity you are seeking.

Some resume formatting rules:

Bold and enlarge your name at the top section.
Keep the sections lined up and consistent.
Use attractive typeface such as Arial, Times New Roman, or Bookman 11 or 12 font point sizes are recommended, except for your Name and Headings.
For second page resume place “Continued” at the bottom of "Page 1", and your name and "Page 2" at the top of page two.
Do not send your resume to a prospective employer without a cover letter.
Your resume should include the following sections:

Personal Information/Heading

Include the following personal info:
- full name
- home address
- phone numbers with the area code (and business, if you can accept calls at work)
- e-mail and and web site address (if applicable)

Career Objective

This section may include:
- Short-term and long-term career goals
- Position you are targeting if applying for a specific job opportunity

Employment History/Accomplishments

Outline 3-4 positions held that are relevant to the job opportunity you are seeking. Start with your most recent position and work back in date order. Include your company and business name, as well as employment geographical location. The best sentences are those that highlight your achievements.

Education/Qualifications


List these in reverse chronological order - the most recent first (e.g. 2005, 2004, 2003, etc.), enter your most recent Educational Experience, as well as the appropriate Degree and/or Qualification earned. Then enter any earlier Degrees/Qualifications. Include ongoing business related continuing education courses contributing to your professional development.

Technical Skills Summary

Describe your computer skills. Provide a consise list of your skills and qualifications for the position you are seeking. You may wish to include other technical skills.

Professional/Personal Achievements

List these in reverse chronological order - the most recent first (e.g. 2011, 2010, 2009, etc.), enter your Professional and Personal Achievements: Professional Achievements, Publications, Volunteer Experience and Awards and Honours.

References

Prepare a list of references on a separate piece of paper. Include names, titles, business addresses, and telephone numbers of 2 or 3 references.
